Why We Created the Northern Thai Tea Journey

12 months, 12 chapters and an invitation to discover the teas, people and traditions of Northern Thailand.

Northern Thailand has an extraordinary tea story to tell. Yet much of that story remains largely unknown beyond the mountains where the tea is grown.

When we started PRANIT, our ambition was never simply to put another selection of teas on a shelf. We wanted to introduce people to a remarkable tea-producing region, its growers, craftsmanship, landscapes and the communities whose lives are connected to tea.

The Northern Thai Tea Journey is our latest step towards that ambition.

It is a twelve-month specialty tea subscription, but we think of it as something much more interesting: an opportunity to explore an entire tea origin through its products, history, culture and people.

More Than Another Tea Subscription

A conventional tea subscription introduces customers to different teas. We wanted to go further.

What if each delivery could take you somewhere?

Into the high mountain gardens of Mae Salong. Inside a small tea factory during the harvest. Along the historic routes that carried compressed tea across Asia. Or into the traditions of the Akha communities whose craftsmanship is part of the cultural landscape of Northern Thailand.

That became the idea behind the Journey: twelve chapters, each exploring a different aspect of our region’s tea heritage.

Over the course of a year, participants discover black teas, fragrant oolongs, green and white teas, GABA teas and traditionally pressed tea cakes. Some are familiar favourites. Others are small-batch productions, unusual processing experiments or expressions that rarely reach an international audience.

We want customers to discover not just how these teas taste, but why they exist.

Developing the Journey in the Mountains

Putting together twelve meaningful chapters has been a fascinating exercise in product development.

Northern Thailand produces an impressive diversity of tea, but finding the right examples requires more than selecting products from a catalogue.

We work with different gardens, factories and tea makers, each with their own techniques, preferred cultivars and interpretations of what makes a great tea.

A single cultivar can produce remarkably different results depending on how the leaves are harvested, oxidised, rolled or roasted. Even the same garden can offer completely different experiences from one season to another.

We’ve spent time comparing these expressions, discussing production with our partners and considering how to build collections that tell a coherent story.

There are practical challenges too.

Harvests are seasonal. Quantities can be limited. Small producers do not always have the infrastructure or resources of larger tea businesses. Bringing together a varied collection means balancing quality, availability, authenticity and the realities of international delivery.

Some teas are available only in small quantities. Others depend on the timing of a particular harvest or the production schedule of an individual tea maker.

These are not always easy problems to solve, but they are part of what makes working with specialty tea so interesting.

Rather than hide those realities, we think they are part of the story worth sharing.

Twelve Chapters of Discovery

We designed the Journey as a progression through the region’s teas, traditions and craftsmanship.

We begin with the black tea mountains, exploring the character of Northern Thai black teas and the influence of different leaf materials and processing methods.

From there, we move into the oolong gardens, discovering the distinctive characteristics of cultivars such as Jin Xuan, Ruan Zhi and Four Seasons.

Other chapters explore the historic Tea Horse Road, the art of oxidation, the cultural history of Mae Salong, GABA tea production, white teas, older tea trees and the traditions of compressed tea.

We also look at how different tea makers can interpret similar leaf material in remarkably different ways.

The final chapters bring these experiences together, encouraging participants to revisit what they have learned and develop their own understanding of Northern Thailand’s tea character.

Each month introduces a curated selection of three or four teas, accompanied by the story behind that particular collection.

Customers can choose between three editions:

Discover: 200g of tea per month

Explore: 300g of tea per month

Immerse: 450g of tea per month

All three editions follow the same twelve-chapter programme. Only the quantity of tea changes.

The purpose is not simply to accumulate more tea. It is to taste, compare, experiment and gradually develop a deeper appreciation of the region.

Building a Digital Archive of Northern Thai Tea

One of the most important parts of the project is what happens beyond the physical box.

We wanted the Journey to become a learning experience that customers could return to long after the tea had been enjoyed.

Each monthly collection therefore comes with its own digital chapter, forming part of a growing educational archive.

Alongside tasting notes and brewing guidance, we explore the geography of the growing areas, local history, tea cultivars, processing techniques and the people behind the teas.

Why did particular tea-making traditions take root in Northern Thailand? What makes one oolong different from another? How do you approach a compressed tea cake? What changes when the same leaf is processed in two different ways?

These are the kinds of questions we want to explore.

Our Field Notes add another dimension, sharing observations from the gardens, seasonal developments, visits to producers and discoveries made along the way.

We want customers to feel that they are travelling through the region with us, learning something new with every collection.

You don’t need to be an experienced tea drinker to take part. Curiosity is enough.

Real Cultural Gifts, Not Generic Promotional Merchandise

One aspect of the Journey that matters particularly to us is its connection to local culture.

Northern Thailand is home to a rich diversity of communities, crafts and traditions, and we wanted to reflect some of that character in the experience.

Throughout the programme, selected collections may include small cultural gifts or surprises sourced from or inspired by the region.

These might include Akha woven accessories, traditional hair ties, small tea tools, dried osmanthus, regional photographs, illustrated maps or other objects connected to a chapter’s story.

We don’t want to fill boxes with meaningless extras simply to make them look more generous.

When we include something, we want it to have a reason for being there, something that adds to the experience and gives customers another connection to the place.

Not every parcel will contain a physical gift, and the items will vary with availability, season and destination requirements.

Authenticity matters more to us than making every box identical.

Supporting the People Behind the Tea

There is another reason we wanted to create this programme.

Northern Thailand has talented growers and tea makers producing teas that deserve a much wider audience.

Some have developed remarkable expertise over decades. Others are experimenting with new techniques or finding ways to express the character of local tea material.

We have the privilege of working with people whose knowledge, experience and dedication make these teas possible.

By creating a year-long programme, we can introduce more of these producers and their work, rather than concentrating attention on just a few familiar products.

It’s a way of building a deeper relationship between the people who make tea and the people who enjoy it.

And, we hope, encouraging customers to look at Northern Thailand as an important specialty tea origin in its own right.

Opening the Journey to Tea Shops and Hospitality Partners

As we developed the Northern Thai Tea Journey, we began to see another opportunity.

Many independent tea shops, specialty retailers and hospitality businesses would love to introduce their customers to a new tea origin through a subscription experience.

But creating a year-long programme requires considerable work.

There is sourcing, product selection, supplier coordination, educational content, packaging, logistics, fulfilment and the challenge of maintaining an engaging experience month after month.

For a small tea business, building all of that independently can be a substantial undertaking.

We’ve already invested much of that work into developing the Journey.

So we asked ourselves a simple question: why shouldn’t other tea businesses be able to share this experience with their own customers?

That’s why we’re opening the Northern Thai Tea Journey to selected B2B partners through white-label collaborations.

An independent tea shop, for example, could introduce its customers to a year of Northern Thai tea under its own brand, supported by PRANIT’s curated teas, twelve-chapter programme, educational archive and cultural discoveries.

A hospitality business could develop a similar experience for its own audience, bringing together exceptional teas, storytelling and a deeper connection to their origin.

The concept can be adapted to reflect a partner’s identity while preserving the authenticity of the teas, their origins and the stories behind them.

For our partners, this creates an opportunity to offer something distinctive without having to develop an entire subscription programme from scratch.

For PRANIT, it creates another route to introduce Northern Thailand’s growers, tea makers and communities to a wider international audience.

We see these as genuine commercial partnerships, with mutually agreed arrangements that recognise the contributions of both businesses.

The objective is to create an attractive opportunity for partners while building something that customers genuinely value and look forward to receiving.

We welcome enquiries from independent tea shops, specialty retailers, hospitality groups and other businesses interested in bringing the Northern Thai Tea Journey to their own customers.

An Invitation to Travel With Us

The Northern Thai Tea Journey is available as a twelve-month experience, with the option to begin with six prepaid months and decide later whether to continue.

Each collection is prepared and dispatched separately, with tracked shipping included for eligible destinations.

For our first 25 paid orders, we’re also including a complimentary 50g specially pressed tea cake made from a 2020 Northern Thai dark oolong.

But beyond the teas, the gifts and the monthly deliveries, our real hope is something simpler.

That by the end of the Journey, you’ll know Northern Thailand a little better.

You’ll recognise the names of its tea-growing areas, understand more about its traditions, discover new ways to brew and enjoy tea, and perhaps feel a connection to the people and landscapes behind your favourite cup.

That’s why we created it.

And whether you join us as an individual tea enthusiast or as a business bringing the Journey to your own customers, we’d be delighted to share this extraordinary region with you.

Discover. Enjoy. Live the Tea Tradition.
