Rare, small-batch black tea from the mountains of Mae Salong, Northern Thailand
Jungle Ruby is one of PRANIT’s signature teas: a rare, fully oxidised black tea manufactured from Taiwanese oolong cultivars No. 17 and No. 12. Produced in very small seasonal lots with Taiwanese tea masters in Mae Salong, it combines the depth and structure of fine black tea with the fragrance, sweetness and endurance of high-mountain oolong.
This is not a red oolong. Jungle Ruby is intentionally manufactured as a true black tea, using carefully selected oolong leaf material and full oxidation to develop a rich profile of malted honey, dark fruit and warm caramelised sweetness. Beneath that depth, the cultivar character remains beautifully present: floral aromatics, a rounded mouthfeel, lingering sweetness and a clean mineral finish.
Each release is selected from either Oolong No. 17 or Oolong No. 12 and may come from the wet or dry season. We do not treat these natural differences as something to standardise away. Every lot expresses the cultivar, season and mountain terroir differently, and PRANIT releases whichever production we believe is drinking at its best.
For beginners, Jungle Ruby is immediately generous: smooth, naturally sweet and deeply comforting, without harshness or excessive astringency. For experienced tea drinkers, it offers considerably more—whole-leaf complexity, cultivar expression, changing aromatics across successive infusions and the structure required for serious gongfu brewing.
Its endurance is particularly unusual for a black tea. Brewed gongfu style, Jungle Ruby gives four to five excellent infusions with ease and can continue into a sixth, finishing with remarkable clarity and minerality. Western-style brewing normally produces two strong infusions, although carefully handled leaves can yield a third or even fourth cup.
Only limited quantities are produced each year. Jungle Ruby is currently exported to specialist tea customers in Switzerland, and we are proud to introduce this distinctive expression of Thai black tea to a wider international audience.
